Aprio Joins with United Way of Greater Atlanta to Empower Diverse Entrepreneurs

September 30, 2024

Innovative program aims to strengthen BIPOC- and women-owned businesses by enhancing access to resources and capital

ATLANTA – Sept. 30, 2024 –Aprio has partnered with the United Way of Greater Atlanta, The UPS Foundation, and Truist Small Business Banking to launch the Building Resilient Entrepreneurs (BRE) pilot program, designed to address the challenges faced by underrepresented small business owners. The program will provide critical resources, financial incentives and mentorship to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and women-owned businesses, helping them build sustainable and scalable enterprises.

Small businesses, especially those owned by BIPOC and women entrepreneurs, continue to experience lower long-term survival rates. National data shows that only 20% of small businesses survive past their first year, 30% by year two, and 50% by year five. These challenges are even more pronounced for underrepresented entrepreneurs, who typically see their businesses last only 3.5 years on average. The Building Resilient Entrepreneurs program aims to reverse these trends by providing participants with practical tools and access to capital, ensuring their long-term growth and success.

The BRE program will support 15 small businesses from the Greater Atlanta region through a six-month program. Participants will receive guidance on business best practices, emergency savings, and mentorship from leaders across finance, technology, marketing and more. They also will have the opportunity to grow their savings with a 1:1 match of up to $1,500. By the end of the program, participants can compete in the Spark Prize Pitch Competition, where they could win up to $7,500 in additional capital.

“We are honored to join forces with United Way of Greater Atlanta to help underrepresented small business owners build sustainable and scalable businesses,” said Michele Blondheim, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Aprio. “Drawing on our deep industry knowledge and strategic solutions, we are committed to fostering meaningful change by empowering underrepresented small businesses. We believe that all entrepreneurs should have an opportunity to succeed and this program truly reflects our commitment and aligns with our broader mission to drive sustainable and inclusive growth across all communities.”

Aprio’s Black Business Forum, a platform that supports and empowers Black entrepreneurs by providing resources, guidance, and networking opportunities, is actively engaged in the BRE program, with professionals sharing their knowledge to provide valuable educational sessions surrounding financial success for entrepreneurs. This involvement underscores Aprio’s commitment to enhancing the resources available to BIPOC entrepreneurs, fostering a collaborative environment where diverse perspectives and experiences can flourish. By sharing their insights, the Black Business Forum leaders aim to empower participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively navigate the financial and growth challenges of entrepreneurship.
