ATLANTA (PRWEB) APRIL 09, 2019
Aprio, LLP, a nationally-recognized, CPA-led business advisory firm has been selected to participate in the America Institute of CPAs’ (AICPA) Private Companies Practice Section (PCPS) George Willie Ethnically Diverse Student Scholarship and Internship Program. Aprio was chosen to participate in the program this year alongside only four other CPA firms.
Aprio will partner with the AICPA’s PCPS to co-sponsor one student for an internship during the 2020 tax season. The AICPA has committed to award up to $20,000 per student to help with tuition during their final academic year.
“Internships are a great opportunity for students looking to gain practical work experience and familiarize themselves with the day-to-day operations of a public accounting firm,” said Carl Peterson, CPA, CGMA, and the AICPA’s Vice President of small firm interests. “By co-sponsoring this program, firms have an opportunity to bring a talented, motivated student on board during their busiest time of the year. And by participating in the program, firms are demonstrating their commitment to diversity to their employees as well as current and prospective clients.”
Aprio has a culture that is as diverse as the clients the firm serves. Over 25 percent of the Aprio team are foreign born and over 25 different languages are spoken at the firm. In addition to its dedication to ethnic diversity, Aprio is committed to the development of female leaders. Today, 34 percent of Aprio’s leadership is female, significantly higher than the accounting industry average.
“We are honored to have been selected by the AICPA to participate in this important program,” said Larry Sheftel, VP of Human Resources at Aprio. “As the largest CPA-led business advisory firm in Georgia, and one of the largest in the Southeast, we recognize our role in changing the accounting landscape and the importance of promoting a more diverse workplace.”
The PCPS George Willie Ethnically Diverse Student Scholarship and Internship Program was created in honor of George Willie, CPA, CGMA, a former chair of the AICPA’s PCPS Executive Committee and the AICPA Minority Initiatives Committee. Throughout his career, George has strongly advocated the benefits of an accounting career to students and young professionals.
