Get the latest in this Aprio blog: The Latest on Tax Filing and Payment Dates.

Just days after announcing that the IRS had extended the federal tax payment date to July 15, 2020, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced Friday morning, March 20, 2020, that the 2019 federal tax filing date has also been extended by 90 days to July 15, 2020.

Taxpayers who are prepared to go ahead and file their tax returns before July 15 are encouraged to do so, particularly those taxpayers who are entitled to receive tax refunds. Aprio will be here to assist you through the filing process, regardless of if you file today or wait until July 15.

These specific relief efforts are only applicable to federal taxes; however, many states have also announced filing extensions and payment deferments for 90 days. An updated list of state actions is available from the AICPA here.

According to an IRS Tax Assistance Center statement published March 20, 2020, “the IRS has temporarily closed all Taxpayer Assistance Centers and discontinued face-to-face service throughout the country until further notice. The IRS is continuing to process tax returns, issue refunds and help taxpayers to the greatest extent possible.”

Aprio will provide additional updates and details as they are made available. If you have any immediate questions, please reach out to your Aprio Relationship Partner, or contact us here.
