Frequently Asked Questions

When are nonprofit taxes due?

Most tax-exempt organizations are obligated to fill out Form 990, an annual information return, by the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the organization’s accounting period. Contact Aprio for assistance with Form 990 or other important nonprofit tax forms.

What is the best accounting software platform for nonprofits?

Aprio’s dedicated nonprofit accounting team offers access to QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, and Netsuite—along with powerful tools such as BILL, Fathom, and BILL Spend & Expense—to help your organization manage integrated accounting and reporting, payables and receivables, board of directors reporting, and more.

What is Uniform Guidance?

Uniform Guidance—officially named the OMB Guidance for Federal Financial Assistance—is a set of requirements that govern how federal awards and expenditures are managed. Essentially, its goal is to provide a streamlined framework for the awarding of federal funds to higher education institutions, nonprofits, state governments, and other recipients.

Understanding Uniform Guidance is a critical element of successful nonprofit accounting. Contact Aprio today to learn more about Uniform Guidance compliance.

Why do tax-exempt organizations still have to pay taxes?

Although many nonprofit or tax-exempt organizations don’t have to pay federal income taxes, they will still have to pay some taxes, including:

  • Unrelated Business Income Tax: Nonprofits have to pay taxes on any income that comes from activities that are not “substantially-related” to their exempt purpose. For example, if a nonprofit accepts advertising funds for their local newsletter.
  • Sales Tax: In some states, nonprofits must pay sales tax on any goods or services they sell.
  • Payroll Tax: If a nonprofit employs staff, they’re required to pay taxes for things like Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment.

Don’t risk falling behind on your mission.
