Overview
Meredith Smith combines technical knowledge with an in-depth industry understanding of state and local tax (SALT) issues to help clients navigate the complexities of tax laws governing SALT issues. Her practice covers state income tax, sales and use tax, and state payroll tax. With more than 20 years of experience in SALT, Meredith works with clients to design sustainable planning strategies that align with tax-specific business goals, while identifying risk areas and compliance requirements.
Experience
Meredith performs nexus studies, evaluates multistate tax exposure, and develops strategies to mitigate risk and optimize tax positions. Her client work includes preparing and reviewing state income tax returns for corporations and pass-through entities, including large, multi-tier structures, and managing ASC 740 and ASC 740-10 documentation for both public and private companies. Meredith also provides audit defense and notice responses for income tax assessments, prepares amended returns related to federal Revenue Agents Reports, and delivers state due diligence for transactions. She also develops indirect tax compliance documentation, such as sales and use tax matrices and nexus analysis memos, and works closely with federal and international tax practices to ensure seamless engagement management. Throughout her career, Meredith has advised clients on compliance and planning opportunities across multiple jurisdictions and industries, and has worked with large multi-jurisdictional corporations and multi-tier partnerships in various industries.
Moreover, Meredith has addressed national audiences at conferences, seminars, teleconferences, and webinars sponsored by the Institute of Professionals in Taxation (IPT), Lorman Education Services, Rocky Mountain Area Conference, and BARBRI (formerly Strafford). She is also the co-host and moderator of the SALTovation: Making Sense of State and Local Tax podcast, a show that brings together leading voices in the SALT space to discuss all things state tax that plague businesses.
Education & Affiliations
Meredith earned a Master of Taxation from the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Miami University. She is a licensed CPA in Colorado. She is also a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Colorado Society of CPAs (COCPA).
