Patrick Deane leads Aprio’s Global Tax Controversy Practice, where he serves as a strategic advisor to clients navigating complex disputes with the IRS, state tax authorities, and related entities. A seasoned tax attorney with a deep technical background, Patrick is known for his ability to resolve high-stakes controversies with precision, creativity, and a client-first mindset.

Experience

In his practice within Aprio, Patrick oversees a multidisciplinary team that supports individuals, trusts, estates, partnerships, corporations, and multi-national entities through every stage of the dispute lifecycle, from audit defense and appeals to debt resolution and penalty mitigation. His specialties include IRS and state audit representation, appeals advocacy and strategic settlement negotiation, penalty abatement and reasonable cause defense, entity classification and tax position substantiation, installment agreements, offers in compromise, lien/levy resolution, identity theft remediation, and administrative advocacy.

Patrick is widely regarded as a “fixer” in the controversy space, combining legal acumen with practical insight to deliver favorable outcomes. His approach reflects the best practices of integrating procedural mastery with forward-looking risk management.

Education & Affiliations

Patrick earned a J.D. and MBA from Rutgers University, an L.L.M. in Taxation from Temple University, and a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Connecticut. Patrick is admitted to practice law in Virginia and the District of Columbia.
