March 27, 2026 – Mark Mirsky, Tax Partner at Aprio, authored an article with the Illinois CPA Society examining the multistate tax risks employers face for remote and hybrid employees.
In the article, Mark explained that many organizations underestimate their multistate tax exposure by assuming a lack of physical offices limits their obligations. He highlighted how even a single remote employee working across state lines can create income, sales, and payroll tax nexus, particularly in service-based industries such as professional services, technology, and health care.
Mark emphasized the critical role CPAs play in helping clients navigate these complexities, noting that common activities, such as hiring out-of-state employees, engaging remote contractors, or exceeding economic nexus thresholds, can trigger filing and compliance requirements.
By outlining practical steps CPAs can take, Mark reinforced the value of ongoing multistate tax oversight and the importance of serving as a trusted advisor as remote and hybrid work continue to evolve.
