Frequently Asked Questions

What is Uniform Guidance?

Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) is the Office of Management & Budget’s government-wide framework that establishes sweeping rules and requirements for federal award recipients. Created in 2014, the goal of Uniform Guidance is to standardize the procedures, audit requirements, and cost principles for non-federal entities (like for-profit or nonprofit organizations) that receive federal funding.

Why is Uniform Guidance important?

If your for-profit or nonprofit entity relies on government funding in excess of $1 million, Uniform Guidance regulates how your award money should be managed and spent. It’s important to adhere to those standards, as failure to do so can lead to increased oversight, cost, and chance of funding loss.

But don’t worry—with the right auditing partner, you can stay compliant with federal award requirements and better position your organization for future funding. Contact Aprio today to see why so many organizations choose us as their Uniform Guidance and compliance partner.

What is the difference between a single audit and a program-specific audit?

A single audit is a broader, company-wide assessment that focuses on overall financial statements and assesses all the government awards given to that particular organization. A program-specific audit is more targeted, focusing on an award recipient’s compliance with regulations set by the single federal program or agency that provided the funding.

What is the threshold for a Uniform Guidance audit?

For fiscal years beginning on or after October 1, 2024, the Uniform Guidance threshold for triggering a single audit or program specific audit increased from $750,000 to $1 million in total federal expenditures.
