Stacy Cullen, JD, LLM
Director of Nonprofit Tax Services
Who I work with
I work with executive directors, CFOs and treasurers of 501(c)(3), (c)(4) and (c)(6) nonprofit organizations. My clients typically have revenue between $5M and $50M, though I have worked with organizations both larger and smaller than that.
My specialty
I specialize in nonprofit tax returns, unrelated business income tax and advising on best practices for nonprofit board governance. With my legal background, I’m able to take a more holistic view of clients’ form 990s and any tax questions that arise. While a well-written 990 is a public document that can be used as a tool to attract new donors, an incomplete or inaccurate 990 can negatively impact an organization’s reputation.
I also regularly contribute nonprofit tax updates and insights to NonProfitAccountingBasics.org as a thought-leader on the topic.
Results I have delivered
I have assisted numerous nonprofit organizations with the IRS. To date, I have not had any adjustments to filed form 990s based on IRS audits
Unique things about me
I signed up for a 10-hour endurance trail race last spring. You could do as many 4-mile loops as you wanted in under 10 hours. Race day arrived a cold, wet and muddy morning. My goal was to run 32 miles. I was feeling great for the first 18 miles. Then I slipped in ankle deep mud and twisted my knee. Every time I completed a loop I had the option of ending my race. Despite not being able to run, and walking with a pronounced limp, I pushed through and met my goal of making it 32 miles.
When I am not at work
In my free time I enjoy cheering on my four kids in their sports, long distance trail running, hot yoga, traveling (my favorite location to date is Darjeeling, India) and live music.
