Overview

As a Tax Partner at Aprio, Darrin works closely with C-level executives and owners of real estate, construction, development, management, and lending companies, specializing in tax consulting, tax preparation, and business consulting services. For over three decades, Darrin has advised clients on how to structure their businesses in ways that mitigate tax liabilities and help them obtain state and federal tax credits like the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC).

Experience

Darrin has 35 years of experience working with affordable housing projects, commercial real estate projects, and real estate funds, including projects subject to the requirements of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). His work has also included teaming with engineers on studies about maximizing depreciation on commercial, multifamily, or single-family homes, as well as consultations on scenarios related to Section 1031/1033 transactions. Darrin also structures non-U.S. capital investing into domestic real estate.

A few of his career highlights include directing millions of dollars of capital gains into qualified opportunity zone assets, maximizing the utilization of tax incentives for multiple developers to minimize the tax burden on their promoted interests, and restructuring estate owned assets to minimize impact on liquidation of assets.

In his practice within Aprio, Darrin works hand-in-hand with developers and funds to provide guidance and ensure timely and accurate returns. He serves the firm as its National Real Estate Tax Team Leader.
